Google Play has launched its first Indie Games Fund Africa, committing $1 million in equity-free funding to help 10 independent game studios across Sub-Saharan Africa scale their businesses and bring locally developed games to a global audience. The initiative marks the first time Google has introduced its Indie Games Fund program on the African continent after previously running similar programs in Latin America.
The fund is designed to address one of the region’s biggest challenges for game developers: access to early-stage capital. Selected studios will receive between $50,000 and $200,000 each, alongside technical support and mentorship from Google Play experts to help strengthen product development, business operations, and global distribution strategies.
Applications are open to independent game studios legally registered in one of 32 eligible countries across Sub-Saharan Africa. To qualify, developers must have already launched at least one game on Google Play, another mobile marketplace, PC, or console. Studios must also have no more than 50 employees, while additional eligibility requirements apply to games published through external publishing partners.
Google said the initiative is intended to support the region’s growing game development ecosystem, which has expanded alongside increasing smartphone adoption and mobile gaming engagement. Despite this momentum, many African studios continue to face limited funding opportunities compared to developers in more established gaming markets, making it difficult to scale production or compete internationally.
Unlike traditional venture capital investments, the funding is non-dilutive, meaning participating studios will not be required to give up equity in exchange for financial support. In addition to capital, recipients will receive hands-on guidance covering technical development, publishing, and business growth to help prepare their games for wider commercial release.
Applications for the inaugural program will remain open until July 31, 2026, at 12:00 UTC, with the selected studios expected to be announced later this year.
