App Store added nearly 560,000 new apps in H1 2026, approaching all of 2025’s total

Apple’s App Store added nearly 560,000 new apps during the first half of 2026, putting the platform on pace to surpass the roughly 600,000 apps launched throughout all of 2025, according to Sensor Tower data cited by The New York Times. The surge marks a sharp acceleration in app publishing after years of slower growth and is being widely attributed to the rise of AI-assisted software development.

The increase follows a 30% jump in new App Store releases in 2025, reversing a prolonged decline in app submissions between 2016 and 2024. With almost as many new apps arriving in the first six months of 2026 as in the entirety of the previous year, AI coding tools are reshaping how quickly developers—and increasingly non-programmers—can build and publish mobile apps.

The trend is being fueled by what has become known as “vibe coding,” a development approach in which users describe the app they want in natural language and AI tools generate much of the underlying code. Platforms such as Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex have lowered the technical barriers to app creation, allowing individuals with limited programming experience to bring products to market in significantly less time.

While the increase has led to a wave of new apps across the App Store, it has also intensified competition for visibility. As more developers publish AI-generated applications, discoverability is becoming a growing challenge, making it harder for new products to gain traction even as the supply of apps continues to expand. The New York Times notes that creating an app has become considerably easier, but attracting users remains far more difficult.

The rapid growth in submissions has also increased pressure on Apple’s App Review process. Earlier this year, Apple updated its App Store Review Guidelines to strengthen restrictions on low-quality, repetitive, and minimally differentiated apps, signaling that faster development enabled by AI will not necessarily translate into easier approval. The company has also continued emphasizing quality standards as the volume of submissions rises.

Despite the influx of new releases, the AI-driven expansion highlights a broader shift in software development rather than a guaranteed increase in successful apps. AI-assisted coding tools are making app creation accessible to a much wider audience, but developers still face the challenges of differentiation, user acquisition, and long-term retention in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
