Snapchat distributes $1 million a day to video creators to use ‘Spotlight’

Snapchat promises to give away $1 million a day to video creators who produce viral content using its new feature, called Spotlight.

Trying to compete with TikTok, Snapchat has launched a new in-app feature called Spotlight. Thanks to Spotlight, the most liked and shared videos of the platform will be brought together.

In a statement made by the Snap company, which owns Snapchat, it was stated that $ 1 million will be distributed to users who produce the most-watched Snaps every day, at least until the end of this year. This is the first time that a social media company will share its income with its users in such a direct way.

Spotlight will also offer a new experience for users to find content shared on the platform.

One of the biggest reasons the company took this step is that the videos produced on Snapchat are mostly viral on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube; because the ability for users to improve their follower base on Snapchat is more limited. In TikTok, it is easier for users to find other works produced on the platform in the ‘chosen for you’ section.

Spotlight allows users to create short videos up to 60 seconds in length and edit them with creative tools including licenced music, GIFs, hashtags, captions, lenses, and original sound recordings. In order to submit a video to Spotlight, you can create a Snap as usual and select the option ‘Spotlight’ at the top of the ‘Send to’ screen.

The difference of Spotlight from other platforms is that users will have to specifically choose to publish their content on Spotlight. At the same time, the identities of the users sharing the content on Spotlight will be protected. Thus, the company wants to prevent users with a higher number of followers from gaining advantage; every user will have the same chance to go viral.

The videos to be featured in Spotlight will be published after being eliminated by the moderators in terms of certain rules and principles. Political content will not be allowed.

Platforms like Twitch and YouTube also have programs that share revenue with content producers. However, in order to earn money, you have to follow certain rules and be famous to a certain extent.

Snapchat stated that every video that exceeds 100,000 views per day will receive a share of the prize. When the company announced the figures for its third quarter balance sheet, it stated that it had 249 million users per day.

For now, Spotlight is available in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and France. The company plans to roll out the feature in more countries in the near future.
