Apple has introduced multiseat purchasing for app subscriptions, allowing businesses and educational institutions to purchase multiple subscription licenses through a single transaction and distribute access to employees, students or other members of their organizations.
The feature enables organizations using Apple Business or Apple School Manager to purchase auto-renewable app subscriptions in volume. The update extends Apple’s existing subscription infrastructure to support centralized purchasing and license management, eliminating the need for organizations to arrange separate subscription purchases for each user.
Under the new system, organizations can purchase the number of subscription seats they require through a single Apple In-App Purchase. Administrators can then assign and manage those seats using their existing device management tools, with the ability to add or remove seats as organizational requirements change. The functionality is intended to support businesses and schools that need to manage app subscriptions across multiple users.
For app developers, multiseat purchasing is enabled by default in App Store Connect unless they have previously modified the relevant availability settings. This means eligible auto-renewable subscriptions can be offered through Apple Business, Apple School Manager and the App Store without requiring developers to activate the feature manually. Developers can also adjust their subscription availability settings at any time to determine which purchasing channels they want to support.
The change introduces an additional distribution option for subscription-based apps targeting professional and educational users. Developers offering productivity, collaboration, learning and other subscription services can make their existing subscriptions available for organizational purchasing through Apple’s infrastructure. Rather than relying on individual purchases, businesses and educational institutions can manage subscription access through a centralized process.
Apple is also preparing to extend multiseat subscriptions beyond organizational customers. Beginning October 28, 2026, developers will be able to configure and test group subscription purchases using Sandbox Apple Accounts. The testing environment will allow developers to prepare their subscription products for the upcoming group purchasing functionality before its public release.
According to Apple, group subscriptions will become available on the App Store during winter 2026. Once launched, the feature will allow individuals to purchase multiple seats for an app subscription and invite other users to access the service. This will introduce a purchasing model that supports shared subscriptions without requiring each participant to complete a separate transaction.
The group purchasing functionality could be relevant to developers offering apps designed for families, teams and other groups of users. However, Apple has not disclosed specific pricing requirements, adoption estimates or additional commercial terms associated with the new purchasing options in its announcement.
The rollout adds organizational and group purchasing capabilities to Apple’s existing auto-renewable subscription system. While multiseat purchasing is now available for businesses and schools, developers will have access to group subscription testing from October 28 ahead of the planned App Store launch later this year.
