Google is preparing an update to the Google Play Store that will introduce new visual indicators for apps optimized for large-screen devices, signaling a continued shift toward tablets and foldables within the Android ecosystem.
According to the latest system release notes, Play Store version 51.2 will add a dedicated badge to identify applications designed to scale effectively across larger displays. The feature is intended to address long-standing usability issues where mobile-first apps are stretched or poorly adapted on tablets and foldable devices.
The addition of a large-screen badge integrates device compatibility directly into app discovery. Rather than relying on user reviews or trial-and-error, users will be able to identify optimized apps at a glance within the storefront.
This change aligns with broader platform-level efforts to improve experiences on non-phone form factors. As Android hardware manufacturers continue to expand into foldables and tablets, clearer labeling within the Play Store introduces a mechanism to surface apps that fully utilize expanded screen real estate.
Beyond the new badge system, the update includes several usability adjustments aimed at improving transparency and navigation within the store.
Users will gain access to an additional view of app content ratings, providing more granular insight into age classifications. Subscription management is also being surfaced more prominently, with users now able to view owned subscription plans directly within app reviews.
Changes to installation behavior are also included. Auto-invoked inline install prompts will no longer redirect users into the Play Store, streamlining the installation process and reducing friction in app acquisition flows.
On tablets, navigation enhancements are being introduced through expanded “Collections” access, available via long-press actions on the Play Store icon or through widget integration.
For developers, the introduction of large-screen badges introduces a new layer of visibility tied to UI and UX optimization. Apps that meet design expectations for tablets and foldables may benefit from improved discoverability, while those that do not could face reduced exposure as user expectations evolve.
The update also arrives alongside broader Google system service enhancements, including new developer tools focused on account management and device connectivity. These updates indicate continued investment in cross-device functionality across Android endpoints, including phones, tablets, TVs, and automotive systems.
While the features have been detailed in official release notes, the Play Store update has not yet been widely deployed. Availability is expected to roll out incrementally, consistent with Google’s typical distribution model for system-level updates.
