Google expands Play Age Signals API globally to help developers deliver age-appropriate app experiences

Google has announced that its Play Age Signals API will roll out globally by the end of 2026, giving Android developers a new way to tailor app experiences based on users’ age groups while minimizing the amount of personal information they need to collect. The API, which is currently available in Brazil, will expand to Australia and Canada by mid-August before reaching additional markets later this year.

The Play Age Signals API provides developers with an age-related signal from Google Play rather than a user’s exact date of birth. According to Google, the approach is designed to help developers determine whether a user falls into a younger age group while preserving privacy. The company says the API can support age-appropriate experiences without requiring apps to handle sensitive personal information directly.

Developers can use the age signals to apply safeguards within their apps, including limiting access to age-restricted features, adjusting social or communication capabilities, restricting personalized recommendations, or modifying content presented to younger users. Google says the API is intended to help developers comply with emerging regulations that require stronger protections for children and teenagers online.

The API also includes tools for situations where parental approval is required. Developers can notify Google Play when they make significant changes to an app that may require renewed parental consent for supervised users. In addition, apps can check whether those changes have been approved or whether a previously granted approval has been revoked.

Google emphasized that the Play Age Signals API is optional and that developers remain responsible for determining how they use the information within their apps. The company also noted that the signals are intended to complement, rather than replace, developers’ existing safety and compliance measures.

The expansion comes as governments around the world introduce new rules aimed at protecting minors online. Google is positioning the Play Age Signals API as a privacy-preserving alternative that enables developers to build age-aware experiences without broadly sharing users’ personal data across apps.

Google said the global rollout is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, making the Play Age Signals API available to Android developers in additional markets as age assurance requirements continue to evolve worldwide.
