Consumers spent $34 billion on apps in Q2 2021

Consumer spending on mobile apps grew 25% to $34 billion in the second quarter of 2021, according to App Annie’s new data. That’s $7 billion higher than Q2 2020 and $2 billion than $32 billion generated in Q1 2021.

While spending on Apple’s App Store increased by 30% Y/Y to $22 billion, Google Play spending reached $12 billion with a 20% Y/Y growth. 

App downloads remained consistent

Although app spending skyrocketed in the second quarter, mobile app downloads remained relatively consistent, which shows that users are becoming more comfortable with spending their money on apps. 

In Q2 2021, Google Play accounted for 25 billion downloads while iOS apps generated 8 billion.

TikTok was the No.1 non-gaming app in Q2 2021

According to App Annie, TikTok was the No.1 non-gaming app in the second quarter in terms of both downloads and user spending. 

While it was followed by Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Zoom on the downloads chart, YouTube, Tinder, Disney+ and Tencent Video rounded out the top 5 in terms of consumer spending.

As the demand for video streaming apps is higher than ever, HBO Max was also among the top performing apps of the quarter jumping up 6 places year-over-year. The app now has more than 18 million monthly active users.

Weekly consumer spend in games surpassed $1.7 billion

The data also shows that weekly consumer spending in mobile games increased by 35% and reached $1.7 billion in the second quarter of 2021. In addition, weekly downloads surpassed 1 billion.

Bridge Race, Hair Challenge, Ludo King, Free Fire and High Heels were the top 5 games in terms of downloads while Roblox, Uma Musume Pretty Derby, PUBG Mobile, Honor of Kings and Coin Master were the top 5 titles in terms of consumer spend.
